Audiovisual

The Millsaps-Wilson Library owns and maintains an audiovisual collection and the equipment needed to use those materials. The  items and equipment are normally in a locked area, so you will need to contact librarian@millsaps.edu at 974-1073.

1. Can AV Equipment be used outside the library?

Library AV equipment use policies are dictated by the user's status and the reason for borrowing the equipment:

  • Faculty may check out and use AV equipment for classroom presentations or for a campus presentation in which they are participating. Generally, equipment is checked out one hour before a class session, and the loan period is restricted to that time period.
  • Staff may check out AV equipment for a job-related presentation or for a campus presentation in which they are participating. However, they may not check out equipment for social organizations. Similar to faculty guidelines, the loan period is generally restricted to the time of the presentation and should be promptly returned.
  • Students may use equipment only for classroom presentations. However, faculty members must notify the Library beforehand. If that student is to pick up the equipment, they must bring their own Millsaps ID card, as well as the card of that faculty member. Checkout will be in the faculty member's name. The loan period is restricted to three hours, and fines will accumulate for any equipment that is not returned promptly.

NOTE: Until the equipment is checked back in, the user is responsible for that equipment.

2. Can students pick up AV equipment for faculty?

Each faculty member may designate ONLY ONE student to pick up equipment for him/her. Faculty will need to contact the librarian@millsaps.edu and
include:

  • The student's name
  • How long the student will be picking up equipment (if no cut-off date is provided, the Library staff will assume that the arrangement will be until the end of the semester)

The designated student will be added to the faculty member's account as privileged for equipment pickup. Also, as a security measure, the student must present the faculty member's ID card and should be ready to present their own ID cards, too. The equipment will be checked out in the faculty member's name.

3. For how long can I check out AV materials?

A user's status (ex. Millsaps faculty, staff, student, etc.) dictates how long they can check out audiovisuals. Included below is a list of media formats and how long certain groups may check out those materials. However, this list provides only the most commonly-used audiovisuals and the groups that use them. Please contact librarian@millsaps.edu if you have any questions.

NOTE: Unless otherwise indicated, all materials can be used outside the library building.

4. How can I check out audiovisuals?

Once you have located the record for a particular title, write down
the call number and give it to the person working at the Circulation Desk. You will also need to present a valid Millsaps ID card.

5. How can I locate AV materials in the library?

Most of the audiovisuals are in the online catalog and can be located by title. For example, if a user would like to know whether the library has a copy of "Blade Runner," they would look up this movie by title and find this call number: VR-312. "VR" stands for video recording, and the tape is #312 in the library's videocassette collection. If you ask for this title, the library staff will find it under that number.

Most audiovisuals are designated by these prefixes in their call numbers:

  • DVD: DVD recording
  • VR: Video recording
  • CD: Compact Disc
  • C: Audiocassette
  • RB: Recorded Book (Book on Tape)
  • LPs are on the online catalog and can be found shelved along the back wall of the 2nd floor near the group study rooms and in the SE corner of the periodicals room.

6. How do I reserve AV equipment?

Equipment can be reserved by contacting:

Otherwise, the equipment is available for in-house use on a first-come, first-served basis. People reserving equipment by e-mail are encouraged to confirm by phone if they do not receive a response within two hours.

7. What type of AV equipment is available?

8. When will the library not loan equipment?

Because the library has a limited audiovisual collection, equipment may not be lent for these purposes:

  • "In Name Only" Checkouts: Users who borrow equipment MUST be present at that presentation, which should be job-related.
  • Social gatherings
  • Non-academic purposes
  • Off-campus groups meeting on or off campus, unless the definition of faculty/staff use is met.

9. Where can I access AV materials?

Ask at the circulation desk and we will direct you to the appropriate place. Some audiovisual material is located in locked rooms, and you will need staff assistance.

10. Where can the equipment be used?

Generally, audiovisual equipment is used in the library building. Television/VCR/DVD/record player combination machines are are located in the group study rooms. Also, faculty may reserve the Engel and Millsaps rooms for classes to view videocassettes by calling 601-974-1073 or 601-974-1090.
Faculty and Staff may checkout AV equipment. See the list of AV equipment to see what is available for checkout.
