| Guidelines:
The CMLC Scholarship fund's purpose is to provide financial assistance to a student in an American Library Association-accredited library and information science Masters Degree program. The $500 Scholarship may be used for any purpose related to the recipient's degree program expenses. In the spirit of former University of Southern Mississippi library science professor Dr. Laura Long's generosity to students, recipients are encouraged to use the scholarship to enhance their education by attending lectures, exhibits, or conferences. Selection:The applicant must currently be enrolled in an ALA-accredited Masters Degree program and have completed six (6) hours. The applicant must currently be an employee of a Mississippi library and must not have previously been awarded this scholarship from CMLC. Preference will be given to employees of CMLC member libraries. The successful recipient will have demonstrated a genuine commitment to the profession by participating in activities that further library skills or enhance knowledge among library professionals within the state. Thus, the scholarship may be used for any purpose that is reasonably connected to the field of library science. The 2007 CMLC Scholarship Winner is
Tamara Nelson Tamara used the scholarship funds to buy a laptop to help complete her coursework. Tamara worked for the Mississippi Library Commission and is now working at a High School in Jackson. The 2006 CMLC Scholarship Winner is Lorianne Hawkins of the Harrison County Library System Lorianne says that, "I would like to use the money to attend The National Book Festival in Washington DC. This event is sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. The National Book Festival emphasizes the joy of reading. The focus is spreading this spirit into schools, local libraries and homes. Not only would this be an excellent opportunity to visit our nation's capital (a personal aspiration) but also a wonderful chance to gather ideas on promoting reading to an area that has suffered much strife and is in need of joy." 2005 CMLC Scholarship Winner Jennifer Wann Jennifer says that, "With assistance from CMLC, I will continue to expand my professional horizons through participation in professional activities while serving my community in the Brandon Public Library and completing my MLIS a the University of Southern Mississippi." |
